Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the option to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
