Powerful Gales Leave Numerous Homes In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens urged to avoid going out as severe gales batter the region.

Severe winds hitting velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in nearly 90,000 households experiencing outages and led officials to halt more than 100 air travel services, based on local media.

These gusts are influencing the whole South Island and southern parts of the northern region, as stated by the national weather agency.

New Zealand authorities have released uncommon high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in central regions including these major districts.

Locals have been encouraged to avoid going outside, stay off roads, and get ready for additional power and communication outages.

Broad Damage and Emergency Measures

The power cut appears to be affecting homes predominantly in the southern region, although agencies state that energy was being gradually reinstated.

Regional news have reported that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, while trees and electricity poles have been knocked down by the gales.

Within the capital, a man was killed after being hit by a wooden fragment at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Flights entering and leaving the city have been suspended due to the winds, whereas some roads and libraries are not operating.

Meanwhile Canterbury officials have declared a state of emergency, to assist emergency management operations.

Strike Action During Extreme Weather

These intense gusts on this day come as many of school staff, physicians and civil servants take part in what has been termed a "mega strike", requesting higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

However the intense climate has forced them to alter some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies shifted to interior venues or called off.

Similar gusts are also sweeping the nearby nation, ushering in a high-temperature event to the nation's interior regions.

Agencies have declared fire bans for concern about forest fires.
