Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these treatments should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
