Colombian President Declares 'I Will Return to Arms Once More' should American Forces Intervenes Militarily.

Donald Trump and Colombia's president have escalated the volume of their exchange, further raising strains between the two countries after American military units attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He has narcotics facilities and cocaine factories and that won't last much longer," Trump added.

Rising Threats coupled with Claims

Talking to journalists over the weekend, Trump suggested analogous use of force against Bogotá, asserting the nation faces serious problems and led by a problematic figure involved in producing narcotics and distributing it to America."

Although Colombia is the world’s largest source of the narcotic, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally connected to the trade.

A Frayed Relationship

Colombia was historically a key ally of Washington in the struggle against narcotics trade and benefited from wide political approval in the US capital, but relations have deteriorated significantly after Trump assumed the presidency.

The nation's illicit drug economy is predominantly run by guerrilla factions such as the Golf Clan, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and dissident factions of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members disbanded following a 2016 peace deal.

Colombia's Strong Answer

Upon being questioned whether military intervention similar to Venezuela was a possibility regarding Colombia, Trump said: "That seems like a good idea to me personally."

President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who disarmed in the 1990s, rejected these allegations. "I am no illegitimate nor am I involved in narcotics," he stated.

"Trump speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he posted in a message.

"If they [the US] bomb civilians, they will transform into numerous insurgents in the mountains. And if they detain me, which many of the country holds in high esteem, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the people," the president cautioned.

From Insurgent to Statesman

He passed a period in his early life belonging of the leftist M-19 insurgent movement though it is believed that he never participated in combat. After demobilizing, he took part in writing the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago subsequently becoming an influential politician. He served as mayor of the Colombian capital before winning the presidency.

"I made a vow to abstain from using a gun ... but for the homeland I would take up weapons once more," he affirmed.

Heightened Measures along with Widespread Rejection

The Colombian defence minister stated that Petro's personal security had been reinforced.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have expressed support with Trump, yet figures from across Colombian politics have denounced the possibility of American military action on Colombia.

Political and Financial Strains

The US withdrew Petro’s visa subsequent to he encouraged US military personnel to disobey any illegal orders. Later, in October, the US enacted economic restrictions on Petro, his spouse and a number of close collaborators.

At the same time the US was building up its military presence in the Caribbean and targeting suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces have also conducted operations against vessels in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
