A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.
The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
